Balance Concerns

Balance disorders can manifest as dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, or a sensation of floating, and can severely impact a person's daily activities. Conditions like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, and vestibular neuritis are commonly assessed using these audiological tests. Accurate diagnosis enables targeted treatment, including vestibular rehabilitation therapy, to help patients regain stability and improve quality of life.

At Soundscape Audiology we offer vestibular audiological assessments, to evaluate the functioning of the inner ear and its role in balance and hearing. These assessments are crucial for diagnosing vertigo and balance disorders, which can result from dysfunction in the vestibular system (part of the inner ear which helps control balance).

Key services include:

  • Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) test, assessing the balance organ responsible for gravity detection (the saccule).

  • Videonystagmography (VNG), which tracks eye movements in response to balance and spatial orientation.

  • Caloric testing, which involves introducing cool and warm water into the ear to measure the lateral semicircular canal function (a main part of inner ear balance function).

Please ensure you have a referral from your referring ENT or Neurologists for these assessments as Medicare rebates apply.
